Working as detectives in New York City, Dee and Ryo were used to leading a fairly hazardous life. They were with the Serious Crimes Unit, so the criminals they went after were a whole lot more dangerous than pickpockets, shoplifters, and such, and
were often as well armed as the police themselves.
With their jobs being so stressful, they liked to spend their days off doing something fun and relaxing, so they could unwind, and recharge their batteries. Okay, yes, sometimes they indulged in some more extreme pastimes, like whitewater kayaking, but usually, if they only had a day or two off, they went for something safer. Perhaps a stroll through Central Park, or a hike in one of the nearest State Parks. There was nothing like a leisurely walk listening to the birds singing, and watching squirrels scampering about, to soothe the nerves and lift the spirits.
The sun was shining, the day was warm without being too hot, and everything was perfect until Dee, strolling among the trees, suddenly staggered back and sat down hard.
“Dee! Are you alright?” Ryo knelt beside his lover, looking torn between laughter and concern.
“Yeah, I think so.” Dee rubbed his head. “What hit me?”
Ryo pointed at a large apple, hanging from a low branch. “You walked into that.”
“Huh! Didn’t even see it, had the sun in my eyes.” Dee scowled up at the apple. “I thought fruit was supposed to be good for your health.”
“Headbutting it doesn’t count.”
