“No, man!” Byron ‘Chalky’ White insisted, shaking his head. “It weren’t me. I’m a reformed character, been goin’ straight since I got out. Even got a job. It ain’t much, just stockin’ shelves, but I’m gettin’ by, keepin’ my nose and everythin’ else clean, if you get my drift. No drugs, not even a beer, I swear!”
“You got an alibi for last Friday night, between ten and eleven?” Dee asked.
“Yeah, like I told ya; I got a job stockin’ shelves, five nights a week, between nine and three. You ask my employer, have ‘im show ya the security camera footage. You’ll see me, right there, doin’ what I’m paid for.”
Considering that Chalky was a six-foot four Black man with a shaved head, and about twice as wide as Dee, there was no way he could go unnoticed.
“We’ll check that out,” Ryo assured him.
“You do that. I’m busy gettin’ my life back together, ain’t gonna screw up, not this time. Workin’ on gettin’ my high school diploma too. Never should’a dropped out. I’ll tell ya who ya should maybe take a look at though. I heard Rayvon Blaze made some kinda big score lately. I was in my old ‘hood, visitin’ my mom and my kid sister, overheard Blaze talkin’ with Terry Jackson. They got real quiet when I walked by, but I figure they din’t think I heard nothin’ ‘cause I had my earbuds in. I din’t hear much, but…” Chalky shrugged. “Might be nothin’, might be somethin’.”
Alright, thanks.” Dee nodded. “Stay out of trouble.”
“You got it, detectives.”
As they left the building, Ryo turned to Dee. “What d’you think?”
“I think it’s a lead. Might not have anythin’ to do with the robberies, but Blaze is trouble, always has been, and that creep Jackson goes wherever the money is. He’ll do anythin’ for a few bucks, especially if it means he gets to hurt people.”
Ryo nodded. “He’s a piece of work.” Then he smiled. “I always sort of liked Chalky. I hope this time he does get his life straightened out.”
