Ryo set his purchase on his bedroom windowsill and stood back to admire it; that should bring a welcome splash of colour into the apartment once the swelling buds opened. He’d loved sunflowers for as long as he could remember; they were so bright and cheerful. Back when his parents had still been alive, his dad had always grown them in the garden of their suburban home, but living in an apartment in the middle of the city, growing them was obviously out of the question. Or so he’d thought until he’d spotted planters of dwarf sunflowers for sale, advertised as being perfect for windowsills.
Seeing the rows of sturdy green plants in their rectangular tubs, he’d bought one right away, not even pausing to think about it. They were irresistible, a little fragment of his childhood memories given form, a reminder of simpler times, before his life had been turned upside down by the death of his parents.
Half filling an empty bottle with water, he gave his new plants a drink, making a mental note to buy a proper indoor watering can and some suitable plant food next time he went shopping. He couldn’t wait to show Dee.
