Summary: The Happy Wanderer and her owners take on a far from happy job.

A/N: Double drabble. Set in my Ghost of a Chance ‘Verse.
 


 

The Happy Wanderer was a cargo ship, designed for carrying goods across the vast interstellar distances between inhabited worlds, delivering them to the planetary surface or to orbiting space stations. That was most of what Jack and Ianto’s job entailed, although they did on occasion take on other assignments, usually of the exploration kind.
 

This time, they’d accepted a rather grimmer task, the salvage of a ship that had suffered a catastrophic explosion in one of its engines, which had blown out a significant section of the hull.
 

Such accidents were thankfully rare; ships underwent thorough maintenance at every port of call as a preventative measure. It was possible that space debris had caused the disaster, but in all likelihood, no one would ever know for sure.
 

The ship, without power, was gradually drifting, and would be a danger to other ships following the space-lanes in the vicinity until it was dealt with. All Jack and Ianto had to do was get the Wanderer’s grapples on it and tow it to the nearest space station.

 
“Lost with all hands,” Ianto said with a sigh. The crew hadn’t been able to reach the escape pods.
 

“At least we’re taking them home.”

That's a grim task without having to directly deal with the deceased. It's good they're the ones doing it and helping with getting them home.
