The supermarket shelves across the city were already almost empty, members of the public panic buying the way they did whenever anything unforeseen happened. Few people seemed to be in their right minds, buying only what they needed. Ryo wasn’t one to overreact though; if people behaved sensibly there’d be plenty for everyone.

Wasn’t it about time the stores started putting restrictions on certain items? Those who could afford to would hoard far more than they needed while everyone else would wind up fighting over the scraps, just trying to get enough to feed their families. It was always like this in a crisis.

Setting down his basket, Ryo moved to separate two women about to come to blows over the last can of soup left on the shelves. He flashed his badge, overruled them both since they each already had several cans in their trolleys, and handed the contested can to an elderly woman who’d been looking helplessly at the empty shelves.

When he returned to his own basket he found someone had helped themselves to most of its contents. He picked up what was left with a sigh and continued shopping, buying just enough to see himself and Dee through the coming week.

The people busy stocking up would probably wind up throwing out half their hoarded food, unable to eat it all before the expiry dates. What a waste! People could be so selfish; sometimes it made Ryo wonder how the human race had survived this long.

The End

Sequel: 'Delivery Service'
