Carol knew it was wrong, and she knew her dad would be so mad if he ever found out, because he’d always told her he didn’t want her to end up like him, in and out of jail. But he was dying, and after all the time he’d spent behind bars, she didn’t want him to end his life that way.

 
By most people’s standards, he wasn’t a good man, he was a thief, a bank robber, but he was still her dad and Carol loved him. It broke her heart to watch him slowly fading away in the prison hospital, far from the sunshine and the summer breeze. He only had a few months left at most, maybe only a few weeks, and the only way she could think of to raise enough money to pay his bail was to steal.
 

Picking pockets was easy for someone as small and slight as she was. Maybe light fingers ran in the family. Carol felt bad about every wallet she lifted, but she made sure to only steal from people who looked like they could afford it, and she only took their cash, tossing the wallets and credit cards away.
 

It was taking longer than she’d thought it would though, people didn’t carry as much cash as they had when she was younger and had first gotten involved with a group of older kids who’d taught her the fine art of picking pockets. At the rate she was going, she wouldn’t be able to scrape enough together in time.

 
So when she lifted the wallet of a man who’d just committed a murder over some negatives, she figured she could just blackmail him, get the money she needed that way. Instead, she almost got herself killed.

 
She was through with crime.
