“Whatcha lookin’ at?” Dee asked, ambling over to where his lover was engrossed in the contents of the public library’s noticeboard.

 
“Hm?” Ryo tore his eyes away from the flyer he’d been reading. “Oh, the local amateur dramatics group is holding open auditions for their next play.”
 

Dee lounged casually against the wall, grinning. “Thinkin’ about auditionin’, takin’ your first steps toward a career in the dramatic arts?”
 

Ryo shook his head. “Hardly. Between being a cop, and a single dad to an aspiring basketball player, when would I have the time? When I’m not working, I’m taking care of my kid, going to his games, or spending time with my boyfriend. Free time is for people who work nine to five, Monday to Friday.”

 
“So why were ya starin’ at the flyer if you don’t wanna audition?”
 

“I was remembering. When I was a kid, I thought maybe I’d like to be an actor when I grew up, so I auditioned for every play my school put on, got small parts in most of them. All the rehearsing was hard work, but it was fun, and my mom and dad came to every performance. But then I started high school, tried out for the drama club, and I didn’t make the grade. That’s when I realised I wasn’t very good at acting and I went out for track instead.” Ryo turned to his lover. “Were you ever in a school play?”

 
“Only once. I was maybe six or seven, and I was cast as a tree. I looked great, I think Mother has pictures somewhere, but I was fidgeting, and my costume got twisted around a bit so I couldn’t see where I was goin’, and I fell off the stage. That was the end of my actin’ career.”
