At a loss for something to do on the long, empty nights he’d been faced with since moving to New York, Ryo had decided to look into enrolling in evening classes of some kind. He didn’t know all that many people yet, just a few of the guys he worked with at the precinct, and he’d soon realised that he needed to put himself out there if he wanted to make the acquaintance of anyone outside of his working environment. Only problem was, going to bars and clubs on his own was something that had never appealed to him.

It wasn’t that he was antisocial or anything, he just wasn’t much of a drinker, and had always been a bit too reserved for the club scene. Loud, crowded places where he didn’t know anyone made him feel awkward and out of place. He could think of few things worse than being alone in a crowd of people and knowing he was likely the only one not having a good time.

When he came across an art class while browsing the available options, it seemed ideal. He’d always enjoyed art when he was at school; taking it up again would be fun, and it would fit nicely into his work schedule. Better yet, it was set to start the following week, so he signed up immediately.

As far as meeting new people went, his new class wasn’t exactly a roaring success. Everyone seemed to either keep to themselves or talk to people they already knew, but it got him out of his apartment, the classes themselves were proving very enjoyable, and he was learning a lot, so Ryo didn’t mind too much. It sure beat sitting home alone every night.

Four weeks in, Margie, the woman who ran the classes, announced that the subject of that evening’s class would be life drawing.

“This is Dee; he’ll be your model tonight,” she told the gathered students, indicating a tall, very attractive, olive-skinned man with jet-black hair and striking green eyes. He was barefoot, wearing nothing more than a loosely belted bathrobe, and looking at him, Ryo’s mouth went dry. “If you’d get yourself into a comfortable pose, Dee?” Margie said, smiling.

Sliding the robe from his shoulders and tossing it over a nearby chair, Dee walked calmly over to the sofa that had been placed in front of the students’ easels and settled himself on his side, facing out into the room. He looked completely at ease despite having his naked body on display for thirty complete strangers. And what a body it was!

While the rest of the students busied themselves with getting their art materials out and adjusting their easels, Ryo fumbled clumsily with his own. He could scarcely take his eyes off the model.

‘Dee,’ he reminded himself. ‘He’s a person, not an object to be ogled.’

Dee must have felt the intensity of Ryo’s gaze because he turned his head slightly as he adjusted his position and looked Ryo straight in the eyes. Ryo immediately blushed and dropped his gaze, but that meant he was looking at Dee’s broad shoulders, his smooth, muscular chest, flat stomach, slim hips, and his… Ryo’s blush deepened. The man before him was very well endowed and he felt himself becoming aroused. Surreptitiously adjusting himself, he thanked heaven that he’d worn loose trousers this evening instead of tight jeans. Risking a brief glance at the model’s face, he was mortified to realise that Dee was watching his every move…

A wide smile spread across Dee’s face, and he winked at the flustered and very beautiful man who was clearly finding his body a turn-on. Dee knew he looked good; he’d been modelling for art classes for several years now and had never gotten any complaints. He’d seen a lot of the students here before, although he didn’t know any of them personally, but the gorgeous guy with the deep, dark eyes and hair the colour of honey was a newcomer, and definitely someone he’d like to get to know better.

The class started and the students set to sketching the naked man lounging in front of them. Ryo tried to focus on his drawing and not become distracted by the fact that the model seemed to be watching him. He was probably amused at Ryo’s reaction, and the blush that was still making his cheeks feel warm. As far as Ryo could tell, none of the women had so much as blinked at the sight of the naked man.

Drawing calmed Ryo a little, and when the ninety-minute-long class ended, he was quite pleased with his sketch; it still needed some work, but it wasn’t bad for a first attempt. The model had gotten to his feet and slipped back into his robe as soon as Margie had announced their time was up, disappearing out of the studio as everybody started to pack up their things. Ryo knew he should probably do the same before the lights were turned off, but he wasn’t quite done yet. He was so intent on putting the last few finishing touches to his sketch that he didn’t notice someone was beside him until a deep voice spoke right next to his ear.

“Hey, your sketch is pretty good!”

Ryo’s head snapped around and he found himself staring into the deep green eyes of the now-clothed model from a distance of no more than a few inches.

“Ack!” Perhaps it wasn’t the most intelligent response to the situation, but he was startled.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare ya.” The wicked grin on the man’s face gave the lie to his words. “I saw you lookin’ at me earlier.”

Taking a deep breath, Ryo pulled himself together. “It’s an art class; everybody was looking at you. You are the model after all; you must be used to being looked at.”

“Yeah, but to the others, that’s all I am, just the model. You looked… interested, or was I readin’ you wrong?”

Ryo blushed again and tried to look away, but long fingers came up to cup his chin, stopping him.

“There’s nothin’ to be embarrassed about. In case ya didn’t notice, I was watchin’ you too, and I liked what I saw. Still do. I’m Dee Laytner. You got a name?”

“Randy Maclean.”

“Randy, huh?” Dee stared intently into his eyes. “Your eyes are so dark, practically black. You gotta have some Japanese in you, am I right?”

“Uh, yeah, actually I do.” Ryo stumbled over the words. “My mom…” He trailed off, finding himself unable to tear his gaze away from Dee’s eyes.

“So, what’s your Japanese name then? You do have one, don’t ya?” Dee’s tone was gently teasing.

“Ryo, it’s Ryo.”

“Well then, Ryo, class is over, I’m a free agent now, so how about you let me buy you a drink? Or do ya have someplace else ya gotta be?”

“No, I was just gonna head home, but…” Ryo took a deep breath and tried to calm his pounding heart. “A drink? Okay, sure. I’d like that.

“Great! Grab your stuff and let’s go! I know a cosy little bar a couple blocks from here. Food’s pretty good too, if you’re hungry.”

Ryo shoved the last few items in his bag, slung it over his shoulder, and let Dee lead him out of the studio.

He’d hoped that taking classes would lead to him meeting some new people, but hooking up with the art class model wasn’t quite what he’d had in mind. Looking at Dee though, Ryo certainly wasn’t about to complain. This had the potential to be something so much better than anything he’d imagined!
