After all the years of hopelessly pining over Dee Laytner, emerald eyed, raven-haired love god, JJ had finally come to his senses, mostly due to the fact that Dee was so completely besotted with his partner that no one else could get a look in, and now it seemed Ryo was finally returning Dee’s affections. Oh, they weren’t obvious about it, but JJ could tell. He’d made an extensive study of the former man of his dreams over the years, plus he was a detective, trained to notice things other people might miss; he could read the signs.

Anyway, it was just as well Dee had someone now, because as handsome as he might be, JJ was beginning to realise Dee was way too grumpy and quick-tempered for his tastes, not to mention too independent. JJ needed to be with someone who needed him, someone he could lavish affection and attention on, someone he could fuss over, and snuggle with, and that would never be Dee. He simply wasn’t that kind of guy.

Drake Parker, on the other hand, was exactly the kind of man who needed looking after, and JJ was just the man to do it. Drake was hopeless at taking care of himself, and he’d been dumped so many times that he’d lost all his self-confidence, if he’d ever had any to begin with, and started to see himself as unlovable, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Drake was kind, and caring, funny, and sweet, and it turned out he liked to snuggle as much as JJ did. Surely it was a match made in heaven.

Things had been going well, once Drake had accepted that he really wasn’t as straight as he’d always thought. That little fact maybe went some way towards explaining why he’d always had such phenomenally bad luck with girlfriends, getting dumped by every woman he’d ever dated, usually within a few weeks. Drake and women simply weren’t compatible, but he’d kept trying anyway, because it had never occurred to him that he might be barking up the wrong tree.

Three months in, Drake was much more relaxed than he had been, not to mention happier and more confident, so when JJ caught his boyfriend touching wood for luck after agreeing to meet his lover’s family for the first time, JJ thought it would be safe to tease Drakey, just a teeny, tiny bit, and in the most affectionate way possible.

“Why, Drake Parker, I thought you told me you weren’t superstitious, that you don’t even read your horoscope, and yet here you are…”

“I'm not superstitious,” Drake defended himself, blushing to the tips of his ears, which JJ found so utterly adorable it made his heart skip a beat. “I'm just… a little bit stitious, and it’s only touching wood, everybody does that, don’t they? Besides, this is a big deal, meeting your family. I want your folks to approve of me, and you know what I’m like, always opening my mouth and putting my foot in it. I don’t want to screw this up, so I need all the luck I can get,” he finished lamely, blush deepening.

JJ felt butterflies swarming inside him as he reached up to kiss his boyfriend. “Then you’ve got nothing to worry about, Drakey, they’re all going to love you, and you know why? Because I already do.”

“You love me?”

“Yes, silly, of course I do! And when my folks see how happy you make me, they’ll welcome you like you’re already one of the family.”

Drake beamed at his boyfriend. “Thank God for that, because I love you too, I was just afraid to tell you in case I scared you off.”

“You could never do that, Drakey. I have a feeling you’re stuck with me for good now.”

If find JJ still annoys me, because he's a bit to cutesy-poo for my tastes, but I'm glad he and Drake will find happiness together.
