If anyone had asked him, back on earth, before he became involved with Torchwood, what he thought the technology of the future would be like, Ianto would have said it would most likely be simplified to the point where any idiot could use it. Maybe it would even be controlled by thought. After all, that seemed to be the direction things were headed, with touchscreens, and voice interfaces.

Staring at the banks of control panels in front of him, he realised he would have been completely wrong. If anything, technology had gone in the opposite direction, becoming as complicated as possible.

“What’s all this for?” He gestured at the rows of dials, lights, gauges, buttons, levers, and more switches than he’d ever seen in one place before. “Seems like overkill to me.”

Jack gestured to a panel helpfully labelled INSTRUCTIONS in big, bold letters. Well, not the English word. The writing was in Galactic Standard.

Sighing, Ianto followed the detailed instructions to the letter, pushing buttons, flipping switches, and finally pulling a lever.

Lights flashed, something whirred, clicked, buzzed, gurgled… A paper cup dropped down and Ianto shook his head.

“All this technology and they still can’t make decent coffee.”

The End
