“I’m thinkin’ we should take a break,” Dee said one evening as he and Ryo left the precinct after work.
Ryo, head already filled with Drake’s woe over breaking up with yet another girlfriend, felt like a bucket of cold water had just been poured over his head.
“What? Why?” Surely Dee wasn’t bored with him already, was he? They’d only been together for a few months. Then again, Drake’s girlfriend had split with him after only five weeks.
“Well, the kid’s away at camp, and we got a long weekend comin’ up, three whole days. I figured instead of spendin’ it catchin’ up on chores we should grab us the chance for some real downtime. Maybe get outta the city, book into a hotel somewhere, kick back and relax, forget all about work. If we left right after our shift, that would give us three nights away, and the best part of three days. Vacation time might be in short supply right now, but a short break is doable, unless you got other plans.”
The tension drained out of Ryo so fast his legs went weak; Dee wasn’t breaking up with him, in fact from the sound of it he was doing the opposite, he wanted them to spend more time together, just the two of them.
“No, I don’t have anything planned. A few days away would be great. Did you have anywhere particular in mind?”
“I was kinda leanin’ towards somewhere along the Connecticut coast, maybe out past New Haven. I’ve heard there’re some nice beaches out that way, lots of trees too.”
Ryo grinned at his lover. “Sounds perfect. We should go online, look up a few places, find somewhere we like the look of and get a hotel booked.”
“I love the way you think.”
