Dee halted on the bank of a creek that was running fast and deep thanks to recent heavy rains. It was too wide to jump across, and since they were off the beaten path, there was no bridge.

“Great, now what’re we gonna do? Suppose we’ll haveta turn back.”

“City boy,” Ryo teased. “Makes me wonder how you made it through the academy if you give up this easily at the first little obstacle.”

“It’s not little, it’s practically a river!” Dee looked one way and then the other. “Which way d’ya think the nearest bridge might be?”

“We don’t need a bridge, or at least not the kind you’re thinking about. We’ve got that.” Ryo pointed at a massive log, all that was left of a fallen tree, which spanned the creek at an angle. Walking over to it, he shoved at it from one side and then the other, making sure it was firm and not likely to roll.

“You expect me to walk across that?”

“Why not? It’ll be easy; just tread carefully and you’ll be fine.” Ryo was already hauling himself up onto the top of the log, using the roots as handholds. “Come on, what’re you waiting for?”

“You go first. If it doesn’t collapse under ya, I’ll follow.”

“Chicken!” Ryo was laughing as he set off, placing his feet with care to avoid slipping on the slick surface. Within a couple of minutes, he was jumping down onto the bank at the other side. “Okay, your turn.”

Determined not to look like a wimp in front of his lover, Dee gritted his teeth, scrambled onto the log, and started forward. “I’ll show him,” he muttered under his breath.

Halfway across, going too fast, he slipped and fell into the creek with a resounding splash. Spluttering, he struggled upright in cold, fast-flowing water that reached his chest, pushing the hair out of his eyes.

“Dee! You okay?”

“Fine, just wet.” Dee waded towards the bank where Ryo reached for his hand to help him out. “Easy, you said. Sure. Easy as fallin’ off a log!”
