“You’re not decorating the Empire State Building,” Ryo teased as he watched Dee trying to decide between two kinds of garland before dropping both into his trolley, and then a third kind for good measure. “Not unless there’s something you’re not telling me.”

Dee grinned at his partner. “You can talk!” Ryo had started out with one of the store’s shopping baskets, but now had two, and they were both full to the point of overflowing.

“Bikky wants some decorations in his room this year, so I thought I’d get a few extra.”

“Yeah, well most of these are for the orphanage. Mother needs to save her money for the necessary stuff, like clothes and food, so I get a few new decorations for the kids every year.”

“A few?” Ryo’s eyes were sparkling as brightly as the shelves crammed with decorations.

“You’re the one who was sayin’, just the other day, that we should make the most of the festive season, what with how gloomy our job can be. I’m just takin’ your advice.”

“Maybe you should check your wallet, make sure you’ve got enough money. Looks like you’re intent on buying up half the store.”

“You’re a real comedian today, aren’t ya?”

Ryo shrugged. “I’m just having fun. Wasn’t that the whole idea behind this shopping trip?”

“Yeah,” Dee agreed, wrapping one arm around his partner’s waist, and hugging him. Christmas had been hard for Ryo since he’d lost his parents in late December when he was barely eighteen. The only thing that mattered right now was helping him to restore his battered Christmas spirit, and if that meant putting up with his teasing, well, Dee was more than willing.

Whatever it took, Dee was determined to make his lover’s Christmas this year the merriest and brightest yet.
