“Carol wants me to be there for the birth,” Bikky said, chewing nervously on his bottom lip.

Ryo wished he could hug the boy, now a married man, but Bikky was in L.A., practically the other end of the country, while he was in New York. Zoom calls were still better than talking on the phone though; at least they could see each other. He smiled reassuringly.

“Well, it’s your baby too. Don’t you want to be there when he or she is born?”

“Yeah…” Bikky didn’t sound too certain. “I want to be there for Carol and our baby, but what if I screw up, pass out or something? And Carol’s so huge, what if the baby’s too big to come out and they have to cut her open? I’d definitely pass out then.”

“I think they have a screen or something if they have to do a c-section. You wouldn’t actually see the surgery.”

“Oh. That’s not so bad then. It’ll still be messy though, blood and stuff, and I’m not squeamish or anything, but it’s Carol. She’s gonna be in pain and it’s my fault; I did this to her!”

“You both wanted a baby,” Ryo reminded his foster son.

“I know, and Carol’s always said she wants a whole bunch of kids, but she might change her mind after this one. She’s had a pretty easy pregnancy compared to some of the others in her prenatal classes, but I’ve been reading up on all the birth stuff and it’s scary, there’s so many things that can go wrong! How can I put her through it all a second time?”

“That’s a decision for the two of you to make together, just like you did with this first one.”

“I guess. Still not sure I want to be there for the birth though.”

“Talk to Carol, and then you should both talk to her doctor, but I think you’ll always regret it if you’re not there. You’ll be abandoning her to go through labour without the support of her husband, and that goes against everything you promised her at your wedding.”

“You’re right, I can’t do that to her. If she kicks me out of the delivery room, that’s one thing, but I should at least try, even if I end up passing out.”

“Just focus on Carol and you’ll be fine.”

“If she doesn’t kill me.”
