“They’re so cute!” Rose exclaimed. She’s seen dozens of alien species by now, both sentient and not, but none as appealing as the fluffy little puffballs that were frolicking around the clearing where the TARDIS had landed.

 
“Just be careful with them,” the Doctor warned as Rose dangled a piece of ribbon for the little creatures to play with. “They’re more dangerous than they look.”

 
“Why, do they bite?” A tiny blue puffball was bouncing excitedly in circles, when it suddenly exploded in a burst of flame, knocking Rose backwards.

 
“No, but when they get too excited, they spontaneously combust.”

Eeep. Spontaneously bursting into flame does not seem like a good survival trait!

Aliens can be very strange. These, I suspect, live quiet lives, but if attacked, tend to deal with their attacker by exploding in its face, this protecting the rest of the pack. Unfortunately, excitement has a similar effect of them.
