For the first time in years, Dee felt he could look forward to Valentine’s Day happily, safe from unwanted, over the top attention, gifts, and declarations of undying love from his equally unwanted stalker and fellow detective. JJ had finally given up hope of ever winning his heart the previous spring, and was now blissfully loved up with Drake, of all people, and despite the relationship seeming to have come completely out of left field, there was no denying that both men seemed a lot happier these days.
Now that he no longer needed to fend off JJ’s advances, Dee was able to focus on his relationship with Ryo, who was not merely his work partner but the love of his life. He and Ryo had already exchanged cards and gifts at breakfast; living together made stuff like that way easier, no more having to send cards in the post, sneak them into each other’s desk drawers without being caught, or wait until they got together for a Valentine date in the evening. They could make the most of the whole day, even when, as this year, they were scheduled to work.
They’d be going out to dinner later, at their favourite sushi bar rather than a fancy, romantic restaurant, because it had proven easier to get reservations there; everywhere else must have been booked up months in advance. Neither of them minded, a sushi dinner suited them just fine, they could do the fancy restaurant at a later date if they wanted, when reservations were easier to come by, and prices were lower…
All of those thoughts buzzed happily around in Dee’s head as he and Ryo took the elevator up to the precinct’s third floor, and he had a spring in his step as he strode into the squad room ahead of his partner, shrugging out of his coat. But his stride faltered, and he ground to a halt when he saw his desk. A heart-shaped red foil helium balloon was tied to the back of his chair, bobbing about in the air currents, and on his blotter sat a plush pink pig, clutching what looked suspiciously like a Valentine’s card in its trotters.
Ryo, who maybe hadn’t been paying as much attention as he should have, bumped into his lover. “Dee? Why’d you stop?”
“Has someone taken over my desk?” They usually had their own office, but they’d been forced to abandon it a couple of weeks ago so that repairs could be carried out on the antiquated heating, which had decided to start blowing out frigid air instead of heat. The maintenance crew still hadn’t found time to do more than turn it off, winter was a busy time for them, so the partners were using a couple of vacant desks tucked in one corner of the detectives’ bullpen. Not ideal, but better than freezing their asses off in an unheated office.
“Not as far as I know.” Ryo came alongside his lover and looked at Dee’s desk, frowning. “I hope you don’t think I…”
Dee cut him off before he could finish. “No, babe, that’s not your style. I only know one person who’d do somethin’ like that…” Dee stalked over to the desk and snatched the envelope from the pig’s trotters. Sure enough, his name was written in red ink on the front, in JJ’s distinctive loopy handwriting.
A giggle came from behind him, and he spun to glare at his blue-haired nemesis, who was standing there grinning. Drake was beside him, trying to keep a straight face but not doing a very good job of it.
“Aren’t you going to open it?” JJ asked, all innocence.
“What for? I thought we were done with all this crap!”
“You really should open it,” Drake added. “It’s not what you think.”
“It’s more a sort of… peace offering,” JJ said. “I saw it, and I couldn’t resist.”
Frowning, more baffled than ever, Dee opened the envelope and pulled out a card with an upside-down heart on the front and the words…
I'm not yours, you're not mine. Be my anti-Valentine.
Dee relaxed, chuckling, shaking his head, and flipped the card open. Inside, JJ had written…
If I promise never to jump all over you again, can we please be friends?
JJ was looking at him uncertainly, waiting for his answer.
Dee handed Ryo the card. “Y’know, you could’a just said somethin’ instead of doin’ all this.”
“I know, but I couldn’t resist pranking you, call it my revenge for the time you shoved me into the trash bin. I thought Drake might have to call the fire department to get me out!”
“You know that wasn’t intentional, right? I didn’t know you’d trip on your own feet, it was just bad luck the bin was right behind ya!”
“I know, but you did push me pretty hard. Not saying I didn’t deserve it, but it hurt more than my feelings. I had bruises for a week!”
“Yeah, sorry ‘bout that.” Dee tried to look apologetic, but honestly, at the time he’d thought it was frickin’ hilarious, not to mention totally deserved.
“So, are we good?” JJ offered Dee his hand to shake. “Friends?”
Dee accepted. “Guess we could try that, see how it goes.”
“Yay! Now can I have my pig and my balloon back?”
“You can have the pig, plush animals aren’t my style, but I’m keepin’ the balloon for now. You can have that back at the end of shift.”
“Okay, that’s fair. Happy Valentine’s Day, both of you.”
“Thanks,” Ryo said, smiling. “Same to you two.”
Then the Chief’s voice roared from his office. “Why’re you bunch of layabouts just standing around? This is a police precinct, not a cocktail party! You’re not being paid to gossip!”
“I think that’s our cue to get on with our work,” Ryo said, handing JJ the pig from Dee’s desk before sitting down at his own.
Dee checked the wall clock. “Our shift doesn’t start for another three minutes!” He slumped into his chair. “I draw the line at doin’ overtime I’m not bein’ paid for.”
Ryo snickered, JJ giggled again, and Drake just shook his head. Valentine’s Day was off to an interesting start.
