“Why are they called bumblebees?” Bikky asked, leaning his chin on one hand as he watched the fat insect buzzing around Ryo’s sunflowers on the windowsill. “Is it because they bumble about?”
“I don’t know,” Ryo admitted, also observing the bee as it tried to fly through the glass of the windowpane and bounced off. “But that’s as good an explanation as any.”
“D’you think it has a headache now?” The bee was bumping repeatedly against the glass, even though the window just below it was open, letting in the warm, late spring air.
“Maybe.” Reaching for his book, Ryo used it to carefully guide the bee downwards until it found the opening and soared through, soon vanishing from sight. Quickly he closed the window so no more bees could get in.
“I like bumblebees,” Bikky said, flopping back onto the bed in his foster father’s bedroom. “They’re all fluffy, not like wasps.” He’d gotten stung by a wasp a couple of weeks earlier, and he hadn’t enjoyed the experience.
“Bees can sting too, so don’t try to stroke them or pick them up. They won’t sting unless you annoy them.”
“I won’t. I just like watching them.”
“Me too.”
