In many ways, the worst part of being a police officer wasn’t the danger, or the low pay, or even all the awful things he had to witness, the blood, and death, and violence. What got to Ryo the worst, especially now that he was essentially a single father, raising his foster son, was the irregular working hours.
Shifts could be long, it wasn’t unusual to work twelve hours, and sometimes he was working days, sometimes nights, or evenings… It changed every week or two. And then there were court days, testifying at the trial of one of the cases he’d worked, which could mean going back again the following day to answer more questions, or because the prosecution hadn’t gotten around to his testimony.
Days off were seldom the same days, and not necessarily at weekends, because criminals didn’t take Saturday through Sunday off. Sometimes he only got one day off, sometimes he got two, and as often as not, what time he DID get off wound up being spent on chores. Cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping… There wasn’t always enough time for those things on the days he was at work.
Still, he wouldn’t change his life for anything.
The End
