This was one of the scariest situations Dee had been in. He and Ryo had split up to canvas for witnesses, but now his partner had disappeared, vanished without a trace. He could be in any of a hundred apartments, and searching from door to door could alert whoever had abducted him, which might mean they’d kill him to keep him quiet. Or he could have been snatched, dragged to a waiting car, and taken somewhere else to find out what, if anything, he knew.
Searching Ryo’s last known location, because they’d been keeping in touch with each other by text, he found his partner’s notebook, where he’d jotted down addresses and anything he’d found out, at the bottom of the stairs. Ryo must have kicked it through the stair railings.
Going to the next apartment on the list, he knocked on the door and when he heard muffled thumps coming from inside, busted the door down. He found his partner tied up and crammed into a closet, with a lump on his head from where he’d been hit.
“Where’d he go?” Dee asked, pulling the gag from Ryo’s mouth.
“Fire escape. At least now we know who we’re after.”
The End
