Despite having done it regularly for years, Dee didn’t think he’d ever get used to working the late shift. Staying up all night had been no big deal when he was younger; back then, he could handle whatever was thrown at him. But now that he was over thirty, if he didn’t have a good reason to be up late, such as having a night out drinking and dancing with his baby, after work he’d far rather spend the evening watching TV, then head to bed around ten.

Working the late shift meant that at ten, he was only two hours into his shift, with the rest of the night stretching interminably out in front of him, when all he wanted was a nap. When had he gotten so old?

Ryo set a cup of coffee in front of him. “Here, you looked like you could use this. I know I can.” He sank into the chair behind his own desk and took a cautious sip of hot coffee. “Late shift is the worst. It always seems to last twice as long as it should. I know we have to take our turn, but I wish I was in bed.”

Wanting to go to bed early is one sign of getting older. I remember when gatherings with friends would last into the wee hours of the morning. Now parties tend to break up around 9 or 10 pm.
