Ryo stood just watching his partner for a few moments as Dee rummaged about on his sofa. Finally, he had to ask. “What’re you doing?”
Glancing back over his shoulder, Dee grinned. “Diggin’ for buried treasure, what does it look like?”
“Like you’re trying to rearrange the sofa cushions without moving them. Why don’t you just take them all off?”
“Because when I do that, it takes me forever to get them to fit back in the right places. It’s like tryin’ to do a jigsaw puzzle where the pieces keep changin’ shape. If I don’t take ‘em off, they settle back down without a fuss. Sometimes I think this sofa’s some kinda half-sentient shapeshifter. It doesn’t like bein’ messed around with.”
That drew a snort of laughter from Ryo. “It’s furniture, Dee; it doesn’t have feelings.”
“You’ve never tangled with it, so you wouldn’t know.”
Ryo sensibly let that go. “What kind of treasure are you hoping to find with all your digging?”
“Loose change, mostly. Gotta do laundry, and the machines take quarters, but the change machine’s empty, and I’ve only got two quarters, which is nowhere near enough. I’m always losin’ change in my sofa, so I figured maybe there’d be some here. Found seventy-nine cents so far, but only one quarter. And half a pack of gum, three pens, five pencils, a comb, two buttons, a stale cookie, no idea how that happened, and a stray paperclip.”
Laughing, Ryo shook his head, digging in his pants pocket and sorting through his loose change. “I’ve got five quarters. Will that help?”
“Yes! Thanks, babe. With yours and the three I’ve got, that’ll get one load done, and I can change a ten into quarters at the bank for the rest. You’re a lifesaver!”
“Always happy to help.”
