Where's The Hub community gone?
Dec. 28th, 2012 01:24 pmI've always cross-posted my fic to The Hub here on dreamwidth, but now it seems to have vanished!
Does anyone know why? Or if it will be back?
Failing that, does anyone think we need a general Torchwood community here on dreamwidth? If so, is anyone willing to assist in creating and maintaining one?

Date: 2012-12-28 03:53 pm (UTC)We do need a general comm on DW, don't we? That bothers me about the Hub, I just posted there not that long ago...

Date: 2012-12-28 04:46 pm (UTC)If it's truly gone, I'm willing to help get a new one up and running, but I'm not experienced at running communities so I'll need to find a couple of other people who are a bit better with computer stuff than I am, especially with regard to headers, community icons and stuff to make it look nice. Not sure how much customisation is available for basic, free accounts as I can't afford another paid account. There are quite a lot of Torchwood fans on dreamwidth and it's just a shame not to have a general community for everything Torchwood.

Date: 2012-12-29 12:30 pm (UTC)I need to find out how many tags are allowed on a basic free account. I'm working up a list, but I need to know the limit. I have tags for fic and art, different seasons, different ratings, fic length, characters, pairings, cast, and an action figure tag so I can cross-post my action figure theatre bits. Oh, and a fic rec tag. I don't know if I should tag for individual episodes in S1 and S2... That would add another 26 tags =S We can add tags where needed of course. At the moment I have 62, I'll probably leave out some of the pairing tags and add in new ones as needed. Although part of me really wants a tag for Owen/Janet...
No ideas yet for a community name. Any suggestions? It needs to be different from any of the livejournal communities in case any of them decide to mirror themselves here (or already do), but it also needs to be recognisably Torchwood. My brain is blank at the moment, which sadly is not unusual!

Date: 2012-12-29 03:00 pm (UTC)AIM is AOL instant messenger; it's free, easy, and wicked convenient if you don't have it. Instant messengers are awesome when you need real time decisions.
As far as tags go, my 'manage tags' page says my max as a personal journal is 1000 so I'm assuming a com would have at least that, most likely more. As far as art tags go, it's always frustrating as an artist to never have the right tag so I suggest 'art:pencil/pen, art:digital, art:paint, art:chalk/pastel, art;serial, art;illustration, art:vid, art:2d, art:3d, art:non-traditional, art:interactive' (which would cover your action figures while still having room for all/any non-traditional interactive art like, I dunno, puppet shows? awww, now I want Janto sock puppets...) Also, I really like episode tags, so as long as you're not pushing the 1000 tag limit already, I'd hit it as well as a CoE and MD tag since I didn't see it there.
Owen/Janet tag? I'm all about that yo.
As far as names go, I'll give it some thought while I'm helping my crazy ex clean out her grams house today. Right now I'm keeping my thoughts and questions in either a notepad titled The_Hub:S2 or a sticky note that says "That woozy moment when you realize you just got stabbed in the chest" which is a great real life quote I'm stealing for Ianto but terrible name for a community. Actually, if we go with the_Hub:S2 the tag line can be 'we added a greenhouse!' lolz, Nerd humor. But seriously, I'll do some brainstorming and see if I can come up with something a bit better than that, but I make no promises. I typically name things by the musical response they evoke.
Also, we need to start thinking banners, headers, gifs vs none, and general image things. They can't be made until there's a name and I saw milady offered to help with those but I'd be glad to assist as well since my sister is *awesome* at journal coding. Her RP journals are always so freaking awesome.
So, I'm off to make myself unhappy in the name of good deeds, but at least I'll have kid free time to focus on brainstorming.
P.S. I like to be helpful/useful, it's a thing of mine, which leads to me tending to want to get my hands in everything in an attempt to assist. Please feel free to tell me to get out of the way if I start getting overenthusiastic/in the way. I won't mind.

Date: 2012-12-29 05:07 pm (UTC)Oh, I tried an instant messenger thing last year but couldn't get it to work - I swear, anything remotely technological and I'm completely lost!
I've got Season 1, Season 2, Children of Earth and Miracle Day tags. That's a serious amount of art tags, never realised there were so many kinds! I'll give some thought to those, might be an idea to ask the artists which art tags would be useful to them. (I know you're an artist, would you need all your suggestions or are some more relevant, with others added if needed?)
Title definitely needs selecting before we can make banners. We'll see what milady_dragon says on that score - I can't do stuff like that but if your sister can assist in that area, we may well need it.
Episode tags for just the first 2 seasons, do you think? I can't see a need for each episode of Miracle Day needing a separate tag, but then I didn't bother to watch it so I can't be certain.
I'm already confusing myself o.O

Date: 2012-12-29 11:40 pm (UTC)I would agree that we only need episode tags for seasons 1 and 2 since the other two are self contained story arcs more than actual seasons.

Date: 2012-12-30 12:27 am (UTC)I'll need to check the episode running order before I do the episode tags. On thing that annoys me on some tags lists is that they only have the episode number and not the title, and if I'm posting a fic based on a certain episode I have to check what the episode number was before I tag it, so I want to do S1x01 - everything changes etc.
Someone suggested tags for genres. I like the idea, so I'd like to get some input on which genres.

Date: 2012-12-30 12:23 pm (UTC)I'm planning to send my tags list around to everyone, so they can add in any tags they think would be useful, so I'll email that to you when I've got it as far as I can.
I think I'm going to leave the action figures tag in and leave off the interactive part of art: non-traditional/interactive since a lot of casual community visitors might not understand it. If it says 'action figurs', everyone will know, and any action figure theatre can also be tagged with 'art:non traditional. How does that sound? It's really useful having an artist on board. Hopefully the way the community is set up will encourage more artists to post their work there.
I'm thinking of adding an immortal Ianto tag, I know that would be something I'd find useful for locating fic. Or maybe Ianto: Immortal, Ianto: long-lived, Ianto: alien and Ianto: timelord. maybe an alternate timeline tag too, but not sure about that.
Hope it was a good party!
