A/N: This one’s a triple drabble.
Carol was never much for fairytales when she was a kid; she’d been a rough and tumble tomboy, preferring to run, skate, climb trees, and play ball with the boys rather than waste time playing with dolls. She liked books, and reading, but preferred tales of adventure and daring to princes and princesses getting their happily ever afters.
Then she’d turned twelve and suddenly boys had seemed less like playmates and more like… something else. She was conscious of the way they looked at her as her body changed and developed; it made her feel awkward and self-conscious. They treated her differently, and she was torn between hating it because she wanted things to stay the way they’d always been, and sort of liking the attention.
She started taking more care with her hair and clothes, wanting to look pretty, and she had plenty of admirers, but she didn’t feel quite like herself around them. Bikky was different, he always had been, and though she was a young teenager now, he was still a kid. Nevertheless, even he, three years her junior, seemed to be looking at her with new eyes.
Other boys asked her out, and Carol even went on the occasional date, but wasn’t interested in pursuing a relationship with any of them. Bikky was growing up, a gawky adolescent, getting taller every day. It wouldn’t be long before they were the same height, and then he’d keep on growing… He was no longer the cute kid she’d practically grown up with; he was turning into a strikingly handsome boy she was pretty sure liked her as much as she liked him.
Now fairytales started to have meaning for Carol; she was the princess and Bikky was the handsome prince. Perhaps together they’d find their happily ever after.
The End
