“Man, I’m tired!” Dee collapsed into the chair at his desk and slumped forward, pillowing his head on folded arms atop a pile of paperwork. End of shift couldn’t come soon enough.


“Mm,” Ryo murmured from where he sat drooping in the chair across from his partner, looking as frazzled and exhausted as Dee felt and sipping from a bottle of water.


Dee had a bottle on his desk, but although he was thirsty, he didn’t have the energy right now to sit up and drink.


“We’re gettin’ too old for this crap.”


Ryo tiredly raised one eyebrow. “Too old? You’re thirty-three and I’m only a year older. Since when is that too old for anything?”


“Since we have to get into a footrace with some armed robber who runs faster than most Olympic sprinters. Seriously, what’s that guy’s secret? If he hadn’t caught his foot tryin’ to hurdle that trashcan, we’d probably never have caught him. I was startin’ to think we should’a tried ropin’ him. Might’a been easier.”


“Somehow I can’t see lariats catching on with NYPD cops.”


“They better not let that guy out on bail, all I’m sayin’. He’ll be gone in a cloud of dust.”
