“Everything’s remakes these days,” Dee sighed, flicking through the pages of the TV guide. “Dunno why they even bother. The originals were so much better, and they never get shown anymore. It’s like the TV companies have consigned my childhood to the scrap heap. All we get are updated and re-imagined versions of the shows I used to love.”

Ryo set two mugs down on the coffee table and dropped onto the sofa beside his partner. “You have to admit a lot of the shows from when we were kids are looking rather dated now. Technology has changed so fast over the last twenty years or so. It’s all mobile phones and laptop computers these days.”

“Yeah, and sub-machine guns, assault rifles, bigger explosions and more blood. Used to be, people shot each other with handguns if they used guns at all, there was minimal blood, and hardly anyone ever died. Don’t get me wrong; I love action movies as much as the next guy, but I see enough violence at work and on the news. Is it so much to ask for TV shows to just entertain the way they used to?”

“The good guys wearing the white hats and the bad guys always getting caught?” Ryo asked with a grin.

“Yeah, exactly! A bit of fun and excitement, a good laugh, and at the end the heroes ride off into the sunset. What was wrong with shows like that?”

“I guess in a world of fast-paced computer games the kinds of shows we grew up with just don’t hold the kids’ attention anymore. It’s all about ratings now, so they pack in as much as possible to keep people watching.”

“Kids don’t know what they’re missin’; I don’t care what anyone else says, you can’t beat the classics.”

I agree with Dee! Hard to imagine, but in the 1970s, Starsky & Hutch was criticized for being too violent!

This, a thousand times over! I couldn't agree more if I tried. It sickens me that good, creative ideas are so scarce, nowadays. It gets so that, in the evenings, Mom and I just put music channels on, if TCM isn't showing a good movie or two, and then throw on whatever DVDs come closest to hand after sunset. And, when I'm up alone after she goes to bed, if I'm not listening to music, myself, I'm either doing a Japanese lesson, or watching Gaki no Tsukai on YouTube. There's just so little entertainment value in modern television.

Even the revisits are an idiotic idea. Sure, they bring back the original casts, but there's no way they can recapture the magic.
