“What’s that?” Dee leaned over his partner’s shoulder to see.
 

“It’s a thank you card, from Mrs Goldman. You know, the lady who was mugged.”
 

“Yeah, I remember her, and her incompetent mugger. Easiest arrest I ever made. Dumbass went back to hide in the same alley and then tried to mug me.”

 
“Not exactly a criminal mastermind, it’s true,” Ryo agreed. “Anyway, Mrs Goldman wanted to thank us both, not just for catching the mugger and getting her rings back, but for being so kind to her.”

 
After the arrest had been made, Dee and Ryo had taken the elderly lady to the hospital to get checked out, wanting to make sure she hadn’t been injured when the mugger had knocked her down. It was just as well since her wrist had turned out to be fractured rather than sprained. They’d waited while she was x-rayed and had her wrist set, then had driven her home.

 
“Makes a change to be thanked, don’t it? Good to know someone appreciates our efforts.”
 

“I wish more people were like her.”
 

Both detectives were more accustomed to having physical and verbal abuse hurled at them. Police work could be a thankless task.
