Ryo groaned under his breath as he manhandled Dee up the stairs to his apartment, his lover tripping on every other step when he wasn’t tripping over his own feet, giggling, and groping Ryo just about anywhere he could reach. Okay, so they’d been out with some of the guys, celebrating closing a big case, but even so, did Dee have to try to drink the bar dry? So much for acting more mature now they were a couple.

“I can’t believe you!” Ryo shoved Dee up against the wall outside his apartment, hoping he’d remain upright long enough for him to find the keys and unlock the door. He’d had a few drinks himself, but nowhere near enough to get completely wasted the way Dee had. “You can be so irresponsible! Sometimes I wonder why I bother. You’re thirty going on fifteen!”

“Aw, don’ be like that, babe! Gotta celebrate catchin’ that guy! Saved lotsa lives!”

The guy in question was a serial killer responsible for seven murders they knew of, and he’d been captured while stalking his next victim.

“I’m not arguing with that, celebrating’s fine, but you end up going right over the top! You know mixing your drinks always does this to you.” Ryo grabbed Dee and half carried him through the door, kicking it closed behind him, then hauled his lover into the bathroom. “Hell, you know better than to drink vodka at all!” Even by itself, nothing hit Dee harder than a few shots of vodka. When added to beer, scotch, tequila, and whatever was in those cocktails he’d finished the evening with, it was a miracle Dee was still capable of putting one foot in front of the other. Mostly.

“Didn’ know I was. I don’ feel so good.”

“No surprise there. Strip and shower, you stink. And any mess you make, you’re cleaning it up.”

Dee started fumbling with his clothes, getting nowhere, so Ryo had to help him. Naturally, Dee then decided he was feeling amorous, even though Ryo knew that drunk as he was, his partner would be incapable of following through. Tugging Dee’s t-shirt over his head, he turned the shower on so it was barely warm, and steered the other man under the spray.

“Get cleaned up. Maybe the cool water will sober you up a bit in the process. And no singing!”

It wasn’t that Dee had a bad voice, even when drunk, but Bikky was asleep in the next room.

By the time Dee was showered, with Ryo checking on him frequently to make sure he didn’t fall and hurt himself, there was black coffee ready.

Ryo sat opposite Dee in the kitchen as he nursed his second mug of coffee. Dee was obviously feeling very sorry for himself.

“Why d’you do this to yourself? You’re not a kid anymore. And speaking of kids, what sort of example are you setting for Bikky? If he’d seen you like this…”

“I’m sorry.”

Ryo sighed. “You always are.”
