Summary: Ryo wanted to do something special for Dee’s birthday, but no amount of careful planning is proof against the whims of fate.

Ryo had written the reminder into his calendar months ago, knowing how difficult it could be to book a table at one of New York’s better restaurants. Four months ahead of time, he’d called and made the reservation for eight on Dee’s birthday, pleased that he’d actually managed to be properly organised for once.
 

He’d always been terrible at remembering important dates, but ever since he and Dee had gotten together he’d been making an effort, copying everything from his old calendar into his new one on January first each year, and checking it daily so he wouldn’t forget anything.

 
His feeling of accomplishment lasted for all of two months, until the restaurant he’d booked went up in flames thanks to an electrical fault. Of course, by then it was impossible to get a reservation at any of the other restaurants he tried. He’d wanted to do something special because it was Dee’s thirtieth, and now fate had messed everything up.

 
“Why so gloomy?” Dee asked.
 

“You know the restaurant that burned down? I’d booked a table there for your birthday, and now I can’t get us in anywhere else.”

 
Dee smiled. “Doesn’t matter babe, long as I’m with you.”
