Dee sauntered casually into the squad room with an insufferably smug grin on his face. Not that anyone noticed until he spoke; his friends were all busy with work. Still, this was way too big to keep to himself; he had to tell someone. Hell, he wanted to tell everyone, and if no one was going to ask why he was so happy…

“You’ll never guess what just happened to me.”

“Not sure any of us want to know about your sexual conquests,” Ted shot back without looking up.

“What?” Dee’s grin faded into a frown. “No! What’s the matter with ya? Get your minds outta the gutter, you know I don’t brag about that stuff!” Not since he was a teenager anyway. “I wasn’t talkin’ about anything like that. It’s not like I need to brag about my love life anyway, not like the rest of you sorry losers who can’t even get a date.”

“Hey, don’t you go lumpin’ me in with everyone else; I’m not a loser!” Marty protested from over by the coffee pot.

“You’re married, so you’re automatically not included.”

“That so? Not sure whether I should be flattered or offended.”

Dee winked. “Depends on how much you love your wife.”

“I married her for better or for worse. Three kids in and it just keeps gettin’ better; so far there hasn’t been any worse. That answer your question?”

“Pretty much. You’re a lucky man, Marty.”

“Tell me about it. Marryin’ my woman was the best decision I ever made. You lot don’t know what you’re missin’ out on.”

“Hey, I’ll have you know I’m not missin’ out on anything.” His and Ryo’s relationship wasn’t exactly public knowledge, but Dee didn’t want anyone thinking his love life was in trouble. Nothing could be further from the truth.

“So what was it you were feeling so pleased with yourself about when you came in?” Now that Ryo knew it wasn’t anything to do with what the two of them had gotten up to the night before, he was curious.

“You’re not gonna believe this, but it’s the gospel truth and I can prove it. I was runnin’ late this mornin’, overslept, so on my way in I stopped off at McDonald’s figurin’ I’d grab breakfast to go, and who should be comin’ out as I was goin’ in?”

“Who?” That was JJ, all agog now, hanging on Dee’s every word.

“Oh, only Patrick Ewing, probably the Knicks greatest player ever!” Dee was all but bouncing with excitement; it may not mean all that much to lesser sports fans, but for him it was a dream come true. “I got his autograph and a couple photos with him. He’s head coach at Georgetown these days, and lemme tell ya, that guy hasn’t gotten soft since retirin’. Hell, he’s probably fitter than me!”

“That wouldn’t be difficult,” Ted teased.

Dee ignored his friend. “Man, what a mornin’! The guy’s a legend and I got to shake his hand!” For a moment he just stood there, grinning, staring off into space as he relived one of the greatest moments of his entire life. “It was awesome! He’s only in New York ‘cause Georgetown’s playin’ NYU Saturday night. He had a radio interview early this mornin’ and swung by McD’s to grab a coffee on his way back to his hotel. Just think; if I hadn’t overslept I never would’a run into him!”

Ryo smiled, happy for his lover. “Fate works in mysterious ways.”

“You got that right.” Dee made his way over to his desk and flopped into his chair, shaking his head in wonder. “What a mornin’,” he said again, getting his phone out and pulling up the photos to show Ryo. “I only got to see him play live one time before he retired back in ’02, tickets to their games were so damned expensive, but I watched every Knicks game I could growin’ up. Patrick Ewing was one of my heroes. Never in a million years thought I’d ever get to meet him. Standin’ next to him I felt like a midget.”

“How tall is he?” Ryo asked, leaning in to see the photos. The man beside Dee was clearly having to stoop a bit to get in frame.

“Round about seven foot.” Dee was a shade under six feet two, making Ewing a good ten inches taller.

“That’s tall.” Ryo himself was only five foot ten.

Dee shrugged. “Pro basketball player, bein’ tall helps. Bikky’s gonna haveta grow some if he wants to make the grade. Not that there aren’t short players out there, but the kid would probably get creamed playin’ against guys as tall as Patrick.”

“He’s only fourteen, Dee, still growing. Judging by the way he’s started shooting up the last few months, I’m pretty sure he’ll finish up taller than you.”

“Yeah? Well good luck to him.” Dee was still high on life; even the prospect of his sworn nemesis eventually beating him in the height stakes wasn’t going to bring him down. He wasn’t sure even getting yelled at by the chief would. Then again, he never paid attention to his boss’ temper tantrums, just let the yelling go in one ear and straight out the other. He lowered his voice so only Ryo would hear. “Between last night and this mornin’, looks like my luck’s taken a turn for the better. How’re you feelin’? Not too sore, I hope.”

“I’m fine.” Ryo ducked his head to hide a blush.

It had been almost eleven before Ryo had left Dee’s place the night before and gone home; they’d spent most of the afternoon and evening in bed, experimenting with different positions, and Dee was a bit concerned it might have been too much for his lover.

“Sure?”

“Yes. No regrets.” Ryo quickly changed the subject. “The hospital called just before you arrived; they said Rudy Keeler is conscious now and stable enough to be questioned, so we’d best head over there.”

“Yeah? That’s good news. Hopefully he’ll be able to tell us who shot him, give us a description at the very least.” Dee stood up as Ryo slipped into his jacket, and followed his partner from the squad room, still with a noticeable spring in his step.

“So what did you get for breakfast?” Ryo asked as they made their way down the stairs.

Dee’s smile turned wry, and he laughed softly. “I didn’t. I was so excited ‘bout meetin’ Patrick I completely forgot why I was there in the first place. Didn’t remember until I was already back in my car on my way here. Think we can stop somewhere and grab a bite on the way to the hospital? I’m starvin’.”

Ryo laughed. “Now who’s the airhead?”

“I don’t care, it was totally worth it.” Dee was back in high spirits once more, feeling like he was walking on air. “So, breakfast?” He shot Ryo a hopeful look.

“I think that can be arranged. Can’t have your stomach rumbling while we’re interviewing a victim; it would be rude. Besides, I could do with a coffee. There’s a McDonalds on the way to the hospital, we could stop there. Who knows, maybe we’ll run into another of your heroes.”

“Nah, I wouldn’t wanna be greedy. Let someone else have a turn; long as I get breakfast I’ll be fine.”
