“I don’t know why anyone even bothers taking part,” JJ commented, looking over the competition in the NYPD marksmanship contest. It was open to all precincts, with both uniforms and detectives eligible to enter, and this year’s contest had attracted approximately fifty entrants, both men and women. “It’s not like they’re going to win the trophy. Most of them will be lucky if they even get as far as the semi-final. We all know who they’ve got to beat.”

“Don’t get too cocky, JJ,” Dee advised. “Just because you’ve taken first place for the last four years, with Ryo a close second, doesn’t mean you’ve got it in the bag this time. There’re two or three who could give you a run for your money.”

“I’m not cocky, just confident. Ryo’s my biggest threat, and he might beat me this year with the pop-up targets, he’s getting really fast as identifying which ones are a threat, and which represent innocent bystanders, but unless someone else has seriously improved since last year, the results will probably be the same as always.”

“Maybe you should sit this year out, give someone else a chance,” Dee suggested.

“You just want Ryo to take first place.”

“Not true. I mean yeah, I’d love for him to win, but not like that. If you weren’t taking part this year, he wouldn’t either. He’d say it wouldn’t be sporting otherwise. I just figure the two of you have enough trophies by now.”

“That’s crazy talk! There’s no such thing as enough trophies. Besides, no one has EVER won five years in a row. Four has been done before, back in the Seventies, but never five. You really think I’d give up my chance of setting a new record?”

“I guess not. May the best man win.”
