When she realised she was nibbling on her thumbnail again, Tosh forced herself to stop. It was a nervous habit she’d developed while locked in her tiny cell at the UNIT prison, with nobody to talk to and, more importantly, nothing to do.

‘I’m not there anymore,’ she reminded herself. ‘I’m free. This isn’t a dream; it’s real.’ She sat up straighter and looked around herself, at the grey walls and floor, the rusting metal catwalks, the lower section of the water tower standing in its pool… This was the Torchwood Hub, her place of work. A place where she was valued and appreciated, where she could make a difference.

Over to her right, Suzie was busy with her welding, oblivious to everything else. To her left and a bit behind was Jack’s office, where her new boss was sitting at his desk, his chair turned to the glass wall. Just as Tosh realised he was watching her, he smiled, wide and warm, and she found herself smiling back, blushing a bit at the unexpected attention. Quickly she turned back to her work.

Surreptitiously she checked her nails; given time they’d grow. Maybe she’d buy some nail polish next payday.

The End

They still play black and white movies here. There's something special about the old classics. I get a channel that they play old classics. I laugh though, because what they're starting to call old things I saw in the theater in high school. The still play the really old black and white ones, but they play 80s movies these days, too. I would not call Ferris Bueller an old movie for one example. When did I get old?

Those our my idea of classic movies, too. I wonder why they don't play them there

I have a hard tine with the 70s and 80s being considered as classics as well. They don't seem old enough. I knew they were considering 70s movies as classics when I tripped over Jaws on the classics channel. I love Jaws. .
