Summary: In which umbrellas are apparently not macho enough for a teenage boy.

“Umbrellas are for sissies,” thirteen-year-old Bikky complained as Ryo put his up, holding it so it sheltered both of them from the heavy downpour.
 

Ryo just looked down at his foster son, eyebrows raised; Bikky had never minded umbrellas before. “Where’d you get that crazy idea?”
 

“My friend Robert. His dad says real men don’t need protection from a bit of water.”

 
“Really? And what does your friend’s dad do for a living?”
 

Bikky frowned, clearly wondering what that had to do with umbrellas. “He’s a bus driver.”
 

“So he gets to spend his working day under cover, unlike some of us. Well, the next time Robert or his dad tries to make fun of you for using an umbrella, you just tell him your dad’s a homicide detective who has to be outside in all weathers, and he uses one. Only idiots who think it’s macho to risk hypothermia by getting soaked to the skin say it’s sissy to use them; real men have more sense. Come on, let’s get out of the rain.” Ryo set off towards the parking lot, Bikky keeping close beside him beneath the umbrella.

 
“Ryo?”
 

“Hm?”
 

“D’you think I could have a new umbrella?”
