For two giddy days, Ryo and Dee rode a series of white-water rapids, whooping and shouting themselves hoarse. The wild rides were interspersed with stretches of smooth, fast-flowing water that gave them a chance to catch their breath, push wet hair from their eyes, grab a drink of water or a bite to eat.

Two or three times each day they paddled out of the current and moored at the river’s edge, scrambling onto the bank so they could stretch cramped legs and massage each other’s aching shoulders, before setting off again.

At dusk on the first day, they made camp on a long, narrow island in the middle of one of the slower stretches of water. Setting up the small camping stove they’d brought with them they heated soup and made tea before spreading their sleeping bags on the grass and indulging in a more intimate physical activity.

In the morning, while it was still dark, the stove was pressed into service once more to make coffee and fix breakfast. They fried sausages and ate them wrapped in slices of bread, then washed at the water’s edge, and got dressed before loading their gear up and getting out on the water once more.

Now the last rapids are behind them, and the wide river is flowing slow and lazy. They dip their paddles to keep in the deep water but they’re in no hurry; their wild midweek break is coming to an end, and they want to drag it out as long as possible.

Soon enough they’ll be back at basecamp, packing everything into the car ready for the drive back to New York, but for the moment they just want to soak up the peace and tranquillity. They don’t often get to enjoy life in the slow lane.
