Summary: Jack doesn’t see immortality as a gift.

A/N: Double drabble.
 


 
Jack knew a lot of people considered immortality to be a gift, something they would give everything they owned for. They didn’t understand though, they never gave a thought for what it would really be like. All they could see was what they could gain from it, living forever, probably amassing a vast fortune, having unlimited power… They were fools, thinking in materialistic terms.

 
The reality of being immortal wasn’t at all what people thought it would be. It was lonely, knowing that he’d outlive everyone he loved, everyone he ever met. In time, every one of his friends and lovers would grow old and die, leaving him alone again.
 

He didn’t even have the luxury of being impervious to harm. Being immortal didn’t stop him from dying, and because he always came back to life again, few people considered the toll his deaths took on him, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
 

His immortality wasn’t something he’d ever wanted, and he couldn’t give it away to someone else. He was stuck with it, for eternity.
 

The real gift was mortality, to live one life with someone you loved. He wished he could have that with Ianto, ’til death do us part.
