Summary: Angel is back, but Buffy knows they can’t resume their former relationship.

After sending him to Hell, or at least some sort of Hell dimension, Buffy had thought that was it. Angel was gone, never to return, so she’d left too, unable to bear remaining in Sunnydale. But she’d come back, because she was the Slayer and Sunnydale was on a Hellmouth. She couldn’t stay gone forever. She should have known that.

 
Only now, Angel was back too, gradually recovering from the hell he’d been through, and where did that leave them? Not lovers, obviously. They couldn’t do that again. But she was responsible for him, she had to be. She’d sent him to hell, and somehow she’d brought him back. Besides, he didn’t have anyone else to turn to. He needed her help, and she was going to keep helping him. That was what friends did, and there was still at least that much between them.

 
So, just friends then. They could do that. She’d supply him with blood to get his strength back… animal blood, not human. In return, he’d help her train, teach her Tai Chi, be someone she could talk to about… everything, really. It was good to have friends.

 
Even if they both wanted so much more.
