Summary: Six-year-old Dee is in trouble with Mother.

Dee knew he was in trouble, just from the way Mother was looking at him; he’d seen that weary, disappointed expression before, and his heart sank into his shoes.

 
Head bowed in shame, he stood before her, dripping mud, which really wasn’t his fault. It had been raining a lot lately, but he was tired of being cooped up indoors, so when the rain had stopped he’d thought it would be okay to play outside, just for a bit... He hadn’t meant to get dirty, especially not right before mass, but he’d slipped and fallen down, and getting back up again had been a bit difficult.

 
Mother sighed heavily and Dee heard her mutter, “Get thee behind me, Satan.”
 

The six-year-old flinched; he knew he’d been naughty, messing up his good Sunday clothes, but he didn’t think he’d been as bad as all that. Slowly he started to slink around behind Mother.

 
“Just where do you think you’re going, young man?”
 

Dee jerked to a halt, staring up at Mother, wide-eyed.
 

“You said to get behind you!”
 

Suddenly Mother was laughing. “I didn’t mean you, dear. Come along, I’d better get you cleaned up or we’ll be late for church.”
