His teachers were forever telling Bikky that basketball was just a game, and that he needed to put more effort into his lessons because that was the only way he’d have any chance of making something of himself.

 
Bikky knew better. Basketball wasn’t a game; it was a sport. Not only that, it was his future. He did the best he could in the various academic subjects, even if some of what his teachers were trying to drill into him went right over his head, but basketball was the only thing he’d ever excelled at.
 

He was never going to be valedictorian; he could barely even spell it. Anything beyond simple math made him feel like his brain was leaking out of his ears, science was confusing, history was a pain, and as for French… He’d probably have better luck learning Martian. Art was kinda cool, and English was okay except that some of the books he had to read were boring. He liked writing essays and stuff, although the proper placement of commas remained a mystery. Geography was interesting, but he couldn’t imagine what it might be good for once he left school.
 

Most teachers, he decided, just didn’t understand sports; they only cared about teaching their own subjects to bored kids who’d rather be anywhere else. Of all the adults, only his coach, and maybe the principal, treated basketball like it mattered.

 
If not for the rule that kids had to keep their grades up if they wanted to play on the various sports teams, Bikky knew he’d probably still be skipping classes, putting the time to better use by practicing his skills. Instead, he had to content himself with team practice, and playing with his friends on weekends.
 

Lessons were a necessary evil, but basketball was everything.
