McGinty’s bar is officially closed for the night, the last customers left a while back, the doors are locked and the lights down low, but that doesn’t mean Dee, Ryo, and their friends can just head home. Not quite yet. There’s still work to be done.

Running the bar as a side gig to their regular jobs means extra work for everyone. They’re not complaining, they knew that when they agreed to help after Terry McGinty left the bar to Dee in his will, and besides, it’s good to have someplace they can hang out together after hours, even when it means washing glasses and sweeping the floor.

They have regular bar staff too, people who are paid to work there, tending bar, preparing food in the kitchen, keeping the place clean and up to code, but most nights there are at least a couple of the guys from the two-seven lending a hand. Dee had said right at the start that anyone wanting to share in the profits had to be willing to do some of the work.

Maybe it’s because they have a vested interest in the place, but even the worst parts of bar ownership, like cleaning the men’s room, are dealt with if not willingly, then at least without argument. Then again, the restrooms at McGinty’s are generally cleaner than those in a lot of bars. At least two thirds of the clientele are cops, so there’s always someone there to arrest anyone for property damage, defacement, littering, antisocial behaviour, or anything else that meets with their disapproval.

“We about done?” Dee asks.

“Looks like.” Ryo ties the trash bag, having finished with the floors, heading for the door at the rear to put away the cleaning supplies and dump the trash.

Dee gives the bar a final wipe down, the dark wood gleaming in the dim light, and looks around, smiling in satisfaction; everywhere looks neat and tidy.

“Hope Terry can see how well we’re takin’ care of the old place.”

“He knew you’d do right by the bar. That’s why he left it to you in the end instead of having it put up for sale,” Ryo calls back over his shoulder.

JJ brings another tray of clean glasses from the kitchen. “This is the last lot, and everything’s turned off.”

“Thanks, JJ.”

It might mean extra work, but their home-away-from-home is worth it.
