The taste of failure is bitter on the Doctor’s tongue. He’d thought nothing could ever make him feel worse than losing Rose that first time, letting her be pulled into the parallel universe where her father still lived, and yet sending her back this time, with the Metacrisis version of himself, was almost easy compared to what he has to do now.
 

Donna Noble, his best friend, a brilliant, wonderful woman… He’s shown her how amazing she is, watched her grow, and now he has to take it all away from her. It’s the only way to save her life.
