Alone. All alone in a place which was not the place she had always known, not the place where she was born, not the place she had grown to full maturity among her own kind. This place was different, strange, full of unfamiliar sights, sounds, and smells. The air was colder than that of her home, the sky grey, and the air damp. She was not dressed for cooler weather and her body trembled with the chill.
She trembled even more, this time in fear, when she heard voices approaching, speaking an unfamiliar language. She tried to hide, but could find no place that would offer concealment. Then the strange beings were approaching, and she thought to flee, but one of them spoke, and the words were familiar to her.
“Don’t be afraid, we are here to help you, we’ll take you to where you will be warm and safe. How are you called?”
“Vrissa,” she replied, unsure whether she could trust these strange persons, but having little alternative.
“I’m Jack, and these are my friends.”
“Did you bring me here?”
“No. There’s a Rift in time and space. One end is anchored here, in this city, the other wanders wherever it will, and sometimes things, even people, get pulled through.”
“I have heard of such things. I always thought them mere legends.” Vrissa paused. “Can you send me home?”
The one named Jack made a gesture of helplessness. “I am sorry.”
“Then I am trapped here.”
“We’ll help you in any way we can. We’ve helped others, even a couple of your kind.”
“There are others here from Seffitar?”
“Yes, and I’m sure they will welcome you.”
Vrissa relaxed slightly. She’d left her birthplace seeking adventure, and had found more than she’d bargained for, but she wouldn’t be alone.
