Vampires were creatures of the night, coming out only after the sun set, unable to bear the light of day. While humans had to be careful and wear sunscreen to avoid getting sunburned, there was nothing a vampire could use to avoid bursting into flames if sunlight made contact with even a small area of bare skin. If they had to venture forth during the day, they had to keep to the shadows, or cover themselves completely, preferably both. At least it meant Buffy seldom had to worry about vamps during school hours.

Demons, on the other hand, weren’t so restricted. They could go anywhere they wanted, whenever they wanted, and while many of them did tend to stand out, thanks to horns, or scales, or tentacles, some of them could even pass for human. That made them tricker to deal with than vampires, and often more of a threat.

They were also harder to kill. No quick and easy stakings leading to a scattering of dust; for demons it was swords, knives, crossbows, the kinds of weapons a girl couldn’t conceal up her sleeve, in a pocket, or under her coat. And demons were messy too. Blood, gore, mucus, slime, lopped off bits and pieces that had to be disposed of… It was gross, but often unavoidable. Buffy had ruined more clothes fighting demons than she ever had dealing with a few vamps.

“Why… won’t… you… just… die?” She ground out in between axe strokes. The axe wasn’t hers, it had belonged to the demon, but she’d gotten it away from her opponent after her sword broke in half, by lopping off a tentacle with what was left of the blade.

The demon didn’t reply, just flailed about, knocking her off her feet with a lashing tentacle. Buffy retaliated by lopping that one off as well. Now it only had three left out of the dozen it had started with.

The sunlit clearing in the woods looked like the scene of a massacre, gooey demon bits everywhere. How was this her life? Another tentacle joined the others on the ground and Buffy pressed her advantage, swinging hard and burying the axe in what passed for the demon’s head, splitting it in two.

Slowly and gloopily, it dissolved into a puddle. Buffy leaned on the axe, catching her breath.

“Okay then.” She sighed. “Hope I don’t get charged with littering.”

I do not envy Buffy having to deal with Demons. Good thing she's so skilled.
