“It was an accident, Ianto,” Jack reassured his distraught husband. “Accidents happen to everyone; it doesn’t make you a bad parent. Besides, Owen says she’s fine, just a bit of bruising.”
“But I should’ve checked where she was before I left the room! Now that she’s crawling, we need to be so much more careful! What if she’d got out of the flat and fallen down the stairs, or down the lift shaft?”
“That would never happen, we’re both too careful about that, and anyway, Nosy won’t let her get anywhere near the front door. It won’t even let her get as far as the steps out of the lounge; I swear that Fluff has eyes in its tail.”
“Keeping our daughter safe shouldn’t just be Nosy’s responsibility! I should’ve double-checked that the baby gate had shut properly when I went into the kitchen to empty the dishwasher; then she wouldn’t have been able to follow me!”
“You’re only human. Being immortal doesn’t make you infallible.”
“I’ve been telling you that for years.”
“You have, so maybe you should start listening to yourself. Even the best parents make mistakes.”
“That’s no comfort. I can’t believe I trod on our daughter!”
