Dee and Ryo had been pounding the sidewalks all morning, at least that was how it felt. They’d probably only been at it for a couple of hours, but it was a hot day in early summer, and Dee’s feet ached. He really wished he’d worn his sneakers today, they were better for legwork, but he was wearing a suit, and sneakers went better with casuals.
He wished he could take his loafers off, let his feet get some air and cool down, but taking shoes off in public, especially when your feet were hot and sweaty, was the height of bad manners. He’d do something about them when he got back to the precinct, probably take a shower and change into the clothes he kept in his locker, because the weather was way too hot for wearing a suit. He wished he could have left his jacket in the car, but he needed something over his shoulder holster to conceal his gun. He envied his partner’s more sensible attire of chinos and a loose cotton button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, worn open over a white t-shirt.
Approaching a convenient low wall, Dee stopped. “Don’t know about you, but I need a rest.” He sat down with a groan. “My feet are killin’ me.”
Ryo perched next to him with a relieved sigh. “I didn’t want to say anything, we’ve only got a few more buildings to canvas, but I could do with a break too. All those stairs…” He trailed off. None on the brownstone apartment buildings had elevators, and they all had four storeys. “If I have to walk up one more flight, I think my knees might give out.”
“So we’ll sit here in the shade and rest, just for a bit.”
“Works for me.”
The End
