Ryo should have been asleep by now. It had been a long day, not physically tiring but mentally taxing, and that was probably at least half the problem; his brain was still whirring away, trying to sort and compartmentalise everything, and while Dee could just switch off as soon as he clocked out, that had never been Ryo’s strong point. Times like this, he had to wonder if his brain even HAD an off switch.
Looking at Dee, fast asleep beside him, looking so peaceful and relaxed, Ryo couldn’t quite repress a vague feeling of resentment. He was just as tired as Dee, and he would have liked to lose himself to the oblivion of sleep as easily as his lover did; sometimes he even could, but tonight, no matter how hard he tried, it simply wasn’t going to happen. As nice as lying down could be, resting was not the same as sleeping, and he didn’t want to be dragging in the morning, but if he stayed where he was, he could already tell he’d just lie here wide awake all night, and that wouldn’t do him any good at all.
Besides, he was hungry, which was the other part of the problem. He hadn’t had much of an appetite at dinner because he’d had lunch so late, and now hunger pangs were nagging at him, giving him another reason for not being able to fall asleep. It was annoying, particularly at… he checked the bedside clock; twenty after one in the morning.
Carefully, he slid out of bed, not wanting to wake his partner; at least one of them ought to be well rested and alert at work tomorrow. Not that it was difficult to avoid waking Dee, he usually slept like the proverbial log, but if there was ever a night when the slightest movement would wake him, it would be a night like this one. Thankfully, Dee didn’t so much as stir as Ryo pulled his robe on and padded barefoot into the kitchen, trying to decide what he wanted to eat.
Rummaging through the refrigerator and the cupboards failed to yield anything that looked tempting, despite the way his stomach was rumbling at the thought of food. Ice cream was too cold, leftover pizza was too heavy, soup was too… something, he wasn’t sure what; it just didn’t appeal. Tonight was more of a milk and cookies night, he thought, but the only cookies left were oatmeal raisin, and while he didn’t dislike those, they weren’t what he was hungry for. Too bad they didn’t have any peanut butter cookies left, or chocolate chip, or vanilla, or…
Ryo paused, thinking. Cookies didn’t take long to make, if he started now, he could have a batch baked in hardly more than half an hour. Warm cookies, straight from the oven… his mouth watered at the thought. Quickly, he washed his hands and started getting out the ingredients, mixing bowl, baking sheets, cooling trays… Peanut butter cookies first, he decided, then while he was waiting for them to cool enough for him to eat, he’d whip up a batch of double choc chip. They could be baking while he enjoyed his midnight snack, and because he probably shouldn’t go straight to bed after eating, maybe he’d bake something else after. He might as well while the oven was on.
Hardly more than ten minutes later, he slid the first trays into the oven, a double batch of peanut butter cookies, because he ought to make enough for Dee to have some tomorrow. They were one of his lover’s favorites and it wouldn’t be fair if Dee woke up in the morning to an apartment smelling of delicious cookies only to find that Ryo had eaten them all. While they were baking, Ryo washed the mixing bowl and mixed the double choc chip cookie dough, so they could go straight into the oven as soon as he took the first lot out.
He breathed in the aroma of baking cookies and smiled. This had been a great idea; ten more minutes and he could sit down with a glass of milk and a plate of homemade cookies…
“What d’you think you’re doin’?”
Ryo spun around so fast he had to grab at the kitchen counter to keep from falling over. “Dee!”
“D’ya know what time it is?”
“Almost two,” Ryo said, glaring at his partner, annoyed at having his train of thought so thoroughly derailed. “And I’m baking, in case you were wondering.”
“I can see that, what I don’t know is why.”
“I couldn’t sleep, and I was hungry.”
“So you just randomly decided to start bakin’ in the middle of the night!”
“No, of course not, but I wanted cookies, just not the kind in the cupboard, and they don’t take long to make, so I figured I’d just whip some up. What’s wrong with that?”
Dee shook his head. “Nothin’, I guess, seein’ as it’s you.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Just that your version of logic is a bit different to most people’s, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s part of what makes you so good at your job; you look at things from a different angle.”
The timer pinged before either of them could say anything else, and Ryo plucked the freshly baked cookies from the oven and slid the next batch in with smooth efficiency, shutting the door and resetting the timer.
“Give them a few minutes to cool before helping yourself, or you’ll burn your mouth,” he warned his lover.
“Does that mean I get to sample your late-night bakin’?”
“You’re awake, so you might as well.” Ryo fetched two glasses from one of the wall cupboards, filling them with cold milk. “Just don’t blame me if you’re falling asleep at work tomorrow.”
“Says the guy bakin’ at two in the mornin’.”
“I was already expecting to be tired tomorrow,” Ryo pointed out. “Insomnia will do that, but at least I’m not lying in bed wide awake and hungry.” He put the milk glasses on the table and added two plates, then quickly washed his baking things, leaving them to dry on the draining board, before helping himself to a warm cookie.
Midnight snacks didn’t get any better than this.
