“Why do you always do that as soon as you come in from work?” ten-year-old Bikky asked his foster father.
“Do what?” Ryo asked, confused, wondering what part of taking his shoes and coat off and changing out of his work clothes seemed strange to the boy. Maybe Bikky’s father had always arrived home, gotten a beer from the refrigerator, and sat down.
“Put your police stuff in that little box and lock it,” Bikky explained.
“Oh!” It was so automatic that Ryo never even thought about it. “I do that because I’m responsible for all my equipment, so I keep it under lock and key when I’m not at work, so nothing gets lost. Also, my gun and taser are dangerous weapons, not toys, and if someone else got hold of them, they might hurt themselves, or someone else.”
“But what if someone broke in here, and they were stealing all your stuff? How would you arrest them when your police stuff is all locked in a box on the top shelf of your closet?” Bikky sounded genuinely worried.
“I wouldn’t need a gun if someone did that,” Ryo assured the boy. “I know karate.”
“Really? That’s so cool!”
