Winter had set in with a vengeance, bringing with it cold winds, snow, and worse than either of those, ice. Safe to say that Dee was less than happy. It was easy enough to wrap up well against cold winds, and snow brought with it the best of winter fun, building snowmen and having snowball fights, but ice was treacherous.
The snowploughs had cleared the streets for traffic, and residents had done what they could to shovel sidewalks and stoops, but despite salt and grit being liberally spread, too many places remained slippery, and more often than not, the ice was the kind that couldn’t be seen until you stepped on it or drove across it.
Just setting foot outside their building first thing this morning had meant risking life and limb, never mind having to canvas for witnesses to a robbery that had taken place last night, before a fresh layer of snow had fallen, covering any incriminating footprints.
“There should be a law against carryin’ out criminal activities in dangerous weather conditions,” Dee grumbled, having slipped for the fourth time in less than a block. Not that Ryo was faring any better. The ridged soles of their boots provided a good grip in snow, but ice played by its own rules.
Ryo snickered. “You don’t think the laws we already have against committing crimes are enough?” he asked.
“Not workin’, are they? Idiots still commit robberies, homicides, drugs offences, and everything else.”
“Then why should a law against committing crimes in bad weather be any more effective than the others?”
Dee glared at his lover. “Fine, then there should be a law against makin’ cops walk the streets in weather like this! We could break a leg, or our necks, and for what? Nobody saw a damn thing!”
The End
