Responsibility weighed on Varian, as it had since he’d begun this journey. Back then, he’d only had two people besides himself to worry about; now there were four, and a cat. Surprisingly enough, the greater number had eased the burden in some respects. More people meant more eyes and ears alert for danger, more hands available for setting up camp and gathering food…

It hadn’t made the journey any less demanding, but the company had been good, especially in the weeks right after Gwenith’s death. He’d been grateful for the support and kindness of his friends, for the way they’d rallied around him, making sure he took care of himself, rested, remembered to eat. The suffocating pain of loss had gradually eased to something more bearable, and he’d been able to let go of the guilt he’d felt, not only over being unable to save his wife, but being willing to abandon his friends to stay with her.

Months had passed since that devastating loss, hundreds more miles lay behind them all now, and despite everything the island and its inhabitants had thrown at them, they’d all survived. There’d been dangers, and injuries, but also good times, fun, and laughter, a sense of being part of something amazing, something none of them would ever forget.

And yet, all of that would soon be coming to an end. According to everyone they’d met recently, Evoland and the portal were only a few zones away. In no more than a week or two, they’d be there, and then it would be time to say their goodbyes.

That was going to be the hardest part of the entire journey. He didn’t want to lose these people who’d become his closest friends, but soon he’d have to let them go, back to their lives.

The End
