It was good to be leaving Coriel and setting out again on the long trek to Evoland. They weren’t sorry to be leaving, after the way they’d been treated; poisoned, imprisoned… Thankfully, Scott and Varian both seemed more or less fully recovered following a good night’s sleep, while Fred and Jonathan had been fortunate enough not to suffer the effects of the poison. The antidote Queen Halyana had supplied would ensure any poison still in their bodies was completely neutralised, so that was one thing they didn’t have to worry about.

It felt strange to be leaving Liana and Sil-El behind, but hopefully it would only be a few days before their friend and her cat caught up with them, once she’d helped Halyana and Morgan set up a new government in which the men and women of Coriel could work together as equals, instead of masters and slaves. If anyone could make them see sense, it would be Liana. She could be very forceful when she wanted to be.

“You’re being rather quiet this morning,” Jonathan said, falling into step beside Varian, who’d let Scott and Fred take the lead today. “Are you alright?”

Varian smiled down at the smaller man. “I’m fine, just… thinking.”

“What about? Or shouldn’t I ask?”

“Everything.” Varian sighed, shaking his head. “I hadn’t expected it to be like this. I knew this journey would be long and difficult, but everywhere we go, we get caught up in other people’s problems, and…” He trailed off, frowning. “It isn’t our place to interfere, yet we never seem to have any choice.”

“We act as a catalyst,” Jonathan mused. “Just by being there we change the status quo. I think we’ll just have to accept that, and try to leave things better than we find them.”

I think "try to leave things better than we find them” is the best any of us can do.
