Being disliked by the general population was par for the course when you were a cop. People seldom had anything good to say about the police unless they needed them to deal with a crime, and even then, there was often a certain amount of resentment involved. Even so, Dee thought it was a bit much to step into in a bar after work, just looking to unwind with a beer or two, and have some random stranger walk up and punch him in the face.
“What the Hell?”
“Leave my girlfriend alone, you jerk!”
“What’re you talkin’ about? Me and my partner just got here!”
The girlfriend in question was tugging at her boyfriend’s arm. “Not him, you moron! That asshole over there!” She pointed to another tall, black-haired man at the far end of the bar.
“What did he do?” Ryo couldn’t help being curious, especially since Dee just took a punch for the other guy.
“He’s my ex. He’s got a real nasty temper, and he knows I work here most nights. He’s not supposed to come near me; I got one of them restrainin’ things on him after he put me in the hospital a couple months back. Found out I had a new boyfriend an’ he lost his mind. Not that he was ever that stable to start with. I should’a known he was bad news, the way he hated my cat.”
“So he’s breakin’ a restrainin’ order, is he?” Dee rubbed his jaw where he’d been punched.
“Yeah. Don’t know if I should call the cops though.”
“No need.” Dee flashed his badge at the young woman.
“Shit!” The boyfriend’s face turned pale. “I punched a cop? I didn’t mean to! I thought you were Cindy’s ex. I never saw him before! Am I in trouble?”
“Relax.” Dee smirked. “You punch like a girl.”
“Besides,” Ryo added, “it was a simple case of mistaken identity, and technically we’re off duty, so we’ll let it slide. The other guy though…”
Dee grinned. “His night’s about to go downhill. Gonna wish he never came in here.”
