Pausing to rest and catch their breath after climbing a steep hill, the travellers sat down on the thin, coarse grass and passed around one of the water canteens. Scott plucked at the tough, wiry blades, uprooting them and tossing them aside as he stared out towards the east. He was pulled from his thoughts as Varian sat down beside him.
“Scott? Are you alright?”
The boy sighed heavily and tore up another small clump of grass. “Yeah, I’m fine. I just… I miss mom and dad. Feels like we’ve been walking forever, but we don’t seem to be getting anywhere. I thought I’d be home by now.”
Varian draped one long arm around Scott, hugging the boy against his side. “We all did, Scotty. This island is bigger than any of us could have expected.”
“Yeah. It must be as big as Australia. Maybe bigger. Varian?”
“Yes?”
“D’you miss your family.”
“My mother died when I was ten, but yes, I miss my father, even though he never understood me wanting to be a healer. He expected me to take over running his lands, but I never wanted that. I only ever wanted to help people and save lives.”
Silence fell for a long moment, until Scott finally got up the nerve to ask the big question. “Do you miss…” He bit his lip, unable to finish, but Varian understood.
The tall man smiled, but there was sorrow in his blue eyes. “Yes, I miss Gwenith, every minute of every day. We had so little time together, so little chance to know one another, but I… miss the life I thought I’d have with her, all the things we never got to do.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be, it’s alright. For two days, I had everything I ever hoped for.”
